Streamcolors designed and created the interactive installation Stream Machine Milano for the exhibition NICE TO MEET YOU, curated by MEET Digital Culture Center and promoted by SEA Airports. From December 18, 2019 to March 31, 2020, passengers at Malpensa Airport (Terminal 1) were invited to pause and experience a moment of pure digital art.

On a large 12-meter screen, the installation brought to life an ever-evolving Milan through images of its iconic places and themes — from the Duomo to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, from La Scala to the Navigli, the Castle, transport and the skyline. The journey spanned from 1744 to today, transforming historical paintings and photographs into contemporary digital artworks.

The experience was made possible by the Stream Machine, Streamcolors’ generative art system built on proprietary digital tools. Thanks to a joystick and buttons inspired by 80s arcade games, visitors could transform 21 initial images into abstract, dreamlike compositions using the Giants, 3D digital sculptures that have been central to Streamcolors’ work for 20 years.

As Giacomo Giannella, artistic director of Streamcolors, explains:
“Stream Machine Milano allows viewers to co-create surreal, abstract, and infinite visions in search of enchantment. It offers the chance to borrow from the art of paintings and photographs to project Milan into an imaginative future, through the digital eye of the machine and each visitor’s aesthetic sensibility. An invitation to discover Milan with new eyes, thanks to digital art.”
